The crowd that gathered around Jesus in Matthew Chapter 5 was most-like very diverse in both economic and religious status. They came to hear the words of a new prophet who did not speak like their normal scribes and Pharisees. His message although strange was delivered with such authority they traveled to hear what he had to say.
